National park
Kazuma Pan National Park
Small, remote grassland park on the Botswana border: open pans, roan, sable, tsessebe and oribi, and only a handful of 4x4 campers.
330 km² · 1 gate · 3 campsites · Run by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks)
About the park
Kazuma Pan covers just 335 km² against the Botswana border north-west of Hwange, and looks unlike anywhere else in Zimbabwe: a wide, open grassland depression in the west and the Katshetshete river drainage in the east. In the rains the depression floods and draws waterbirds; as it dries, game concentrates on the pumped water points at Corner Pan and Insiza, where roan, sable, tsessebe, oribi, eland, buffalo and elephant come to drink, with lion and cheetah around. It is a camp-yourself, self-drive park with a few ZimParks campsites and bush camps, reached from the Pandamatenga border area about 30 km to the south, or from Victoria Falls through the Panda Masuwe forest; report to the park office on arrival. It is strictly 4x4, very little visited and best from August to November. The park closes in the rainy months, January to April, when the roads become impassable.
