Privacy policy
Last updated 6 November 2026
We collect as little as we can. You can use the map without an account, we don't show ads, and we don't sell or share your details for marketing.
Who we are
Campesa is the “responsible party” under South Africa's POPIA and the “controller” under the GDPR for the personal information described here. Questions or requests: info@campesa.org.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and password (stored scrambled; we can't read it), and the name, home country, currency and distance unit you choose.
- What you save: saved campsites, private notes and trips (their stops, booking statuses and day notes). These are visible only to you and the people you invite to a trip, unless you turn on a trip's share link, in which case anyone with the link can see that trip.
- Trip invites: the email address of anyone you invite to a trip, so they can join it when they sign in.
- What you send us: edit suggestions, and for campsite operators the business details and evidence you give when claiming a campsite, and the details of any campsite you add. We keep these so we can review them and see who changed what.
- Technical logs: our hosting and database providers record IP addresses and request details for security and fault-finding, kept for a short time.
Without an account, we don't store anything about you on our servers beyond those logs.
Kept on your device
Your currency and km/miles choices, the countries you show on the map, the map's last position, and copies of pages, map areas, saved places and trips for offline use are stored in your browser. They never leave your device and you can clear them in your browser settings. We use a sign-in cookie to keep you signed in, and no advertising or tracking cookies.
The “my location” buttons use your device's location on your device, to move the map or start directions from where you are. We don't store it. When you ask for directions, the start and end points are sent to our database to work out the route.
Who else handles it
- Supabase stores our database and accounts, on servers in Ireland (EU).
- Hostinger hosts the website.
- Photon (komoot, Germany) receives what you type in the search box when we look up towns, along with your IP address.
- OpenFreeMap supplies the map background and sees your IP address when your browser loads it.
- Photo hosts: campsite photos load straight from the campsite's own website, Wikimedia Commons, Google Maps or Tripadvisor, which see your IP address when your browser loads them.
Some of these providers are outside your country. We only use providers that protect personal information to a standard comparable to POPIA and the GDPR.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and what you've saved until you delete it or ask us to. Edit suggestions, operator claims and campsites added by operators are kept with the campsite's change history, linked to your account until it's deleted.
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, correct it, get a copy, or have it deleted, and you can object to how we use it. Email info@campesa.org and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer you can complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa), your local data-protection authority in the EU or UK, or the regulator where you live.
Children
Campesa isn't aimed at children, and you need to be 18 or over to create an account.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell account holders by email.
