Daan Viljoen Game Park
Small game park in the Khomas Hochland hills 24 km west of Windhoek, where you can walk among zebra, kudu and oryx.
40 km² · 1 gate · 1 campsite · Run by Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT); lodge and camp run by Sun Karros
About the park
Daan Viljoen covers 40 km² of rocky highland shrubland just west of Windhoek, close enough for an afternoon outing or a quiet first night after landing. Unusually for a Namibian park, you can walk among the game: marked trails of 3 km and 9 km leave from the camp, and a 32 km overnight trail must be booked ahead. Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, eland, oryx, springbok, blue wildebeest and klipspringer are the usual sightings, leopard is present but rarely seen, and about 200 bird species include Rüppell's parrot and Monteiro's hornbill. A short self-drive game loop is rocky in places, so a car with decent ground clearance helps. The lodge and campsite are run privately for their own guests and are not open to day visitors.
