About the park
Chimfunshi is a chimpanzee sanctuary founded in 1983 on about 10,000 ha of miombo bush beside the Kafue River, 65 km west of Chingola. Around 150 rescued chimpanzees live in large semi-wild enclosures of up to 80 ha, and day visitors can watch them from the viewing areas, best around 11:00 or 14:00. You can also walk, birdwatch, hire a canoe or a bike, and stay overnight in dorms, private rooms or the campsite. It is about 15 km of good gravel off the Chingola–Solwezi road; bring your own car, as the enclosures and orphanage are several kilometres apart.
