Campsite
Camp at one of the world's largest chimpanzee sanctuaries, west of Chingola, with over 150 rescued chimps living in miombo forest.
A long-running chimpanzee sanctuary in the Copperbelt bush where campers stay by the education centre and drive out to watch rescued chimps in big forest enclosures. Simple and solar-powered, it makes a rewarding detour off the Chingola-Solwezi road.
Chimfunshi began in 1983, when David and Sheila Siddle took an injured baby chimpanzee into their cattle ranch on the Kafue River. Today the sanctuary covers about 10,000 ha of miombo woodland and wetland. More than 150 chimpanzees live in large semi-wild forest enclosures, so a stay is planned around the viewing times in the late morning and mid-afternoon, when the groups come close to the fences. Campers stay beside the education centre and visitor cottages, and outside the viewing times you can hire a canoe or a bike, walk the woodland trails or go birding. It is about 15 km of good gravel off the Chingola-Solwezi road, but you need your own vehicle to reach the enclosures and the old orphanage. The site runs on solar power that can run out early on busy evenings, and there is little phone signal.

Tar to the turn-off, then 15 km of well-maintained gravel. About 2 hours from Chingola and 3 from Kitwe. Arrive before dark; the gate closes at 17:00.
From Chingola head towards Chililabombwe and turn left (west) at the main junction and checkpoint onto the Solwezi road. After about 50 km turn right (north) at the Chimfunshi sign onto a gravel road; the Education Centre and reception are 15 km further. The chimp enclosures are about 4.5 km from the Education Centre and the orphanage about 8 km. GPS S12 21.924 E027 28.912.
