About the park
Ohorongo is a 35,000 ha private reserve in the Kunene Region, a landscape of open veld, thorn savannah and granite mountains off the C35 between Khorixas and Kamanjab. Black rhino are the conservation focus, with eland, kudu, mountain zebra and giraffe among some 40 other species, and north-western endemic birds such as Damara hornbill, Hartlaub's francolin and white-tailed shrike. There are two places to stay, a five-tent camp and a five-bungalow lodge, and all game viewing is guided: mixed drive-and-walk outings that stop at rock engravings and paintings, rhino tracking with the reserve's rangers, early walks along dry riverbeds and night drives for wildcat, genet and owls. Self-drivers arrive on gravel farm roads off the C35 or C40, and fly-in guests use the reserve's airstrip. It sits roughly halfway between Swakopmund and Etosha, so it works well as a two-night break on that route. The catch: the tented camp has a two-night minimum, and rhino tracking is not open to children under 12.
