About the park
This reserve, better known as Canyon Nature Park, covers about 45,000 ha of plateau and side ravines on the west side of the Fish River Canyon, bordering the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. Flat-topped mountains and open plains break off into a canyon roughly 550 m deep, with quiver trees and more than a hundred endemic succulents on the slopes. You come here to walk: rim walks from Fish River Lodge, guided small-group hikes down into the canyon, and visits to rock art and old farm sites. Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, oryx and springbok are about, with shy leopard, caracal and brown hyena, and more than 240 bird species are recorded. It is a long gravel drive, so fill up and shop in Keetmanshoop, Rosh Pinah or Aus on the way.
