Riverside camp at the Pungwe B mini-hydro station in the Honde Valley, among boulders, pools and rapids on the lower Pungwe.
An unusual camp at a mini-hydro station whose real attraction is the clear, boulder-strewn Pungwe River and the walks around it. It suits self-reliant campers exploring the Honde Valley who are happy to arrange access with the operator in advance.
This small camp grew out of the Pungwe B hydro scheme in the Honde Valley, where facilities built for the project's managers and contractors were left as a campsite. The draw is the river: clear water running between big boulders, deep pools, rapids and small falls, with walks along the banks and up the ridges that guide the Pungwe towards Mozambique, and the Pinnacles on the southern side of the valley. Unusually for a remote camp, power from the station runs day and night, and the turbines' low hum is part of the soundtrack. The Pungwe floods fast and dangerously in the rains, so keep out of the water then and check the weather before driving down.
