Resort campsite on Lake Mutirikwi's south shore, built around the homestead of the man behind the dam, ten minutes from Great Zimbabwe.
A lodge-style campsite whose draw is position: lake views from the granite hills and the shortest drive to Great Zimbabwe of any camp here. Camping is a sideline to the hotel, so rates and the state of the pitches are worth checking first.
The resort grew up around the tin-roofed homestead of Murray MacDougall, the lowveld sugar pioneer who pushed for the dam that created Lake Mutirikwi, and it looks out over the lake from granite hills and msasa woodland on the south shore. The campsite is spread among boulders and trees, so a single car and a large group can each find a sheltered corner, and campers have the resort's restaurant, bar and gardens close by, which draw birdwatchers in the early morning. Great Zimbabwe is about a ten-minute drive away, which makes this one of the closest camps to the ruins, and the lake offers bass fishing and boat trips. The resort mainly caters for room guests and conferences, so expect a lodge atmosphere rather than a quiet bush camp, and ask for current camping rates before you arrive.
