ZimParks camping ground at Hwange's main gate, the easiest base for the pumped pans and platforms of the park's busy eastern sector.

The park's headquarters campsite, chosen for convenience: tar to the gate and the eastern sector's pumped pans and platforms within easy reach. Upkeep has been patchy for years, so it works best as a base rather than a destination.
Main Camp is the park's original headquarters at the main entrance near Dete, and its camping and caravan ground puts you within a short drive of Nyamandhlovu Pan's raised platform and the loop roads to Kennedy, Ngweshla and Guvalala, where most of Hwange's game viewing happens. Impala graze around reception, and outside the busy months campers often find the ground spacious and quiet, with room to spread out. It is reached by 23 km of tar from Cross Mabale on the Bulawayo to Victoria Falls road, so any car gets here. The catch is the upkeep: ablutions are dated, hot water depends on a wood-fired boiler, shade is thin, so come self-sufficient and be in camp before the 18:00 gate close.

Tar all the way to the gate. Park roads beyond are gravel and sand; a 4x4 is advised for game drives, especially December to March. Vehicles may not set off from Main Camp for Sinamatella after 14:00.
From the A8 Bulawayo to Victoria Falls road, turn off at Cross Mabale (283 km from Bulawayo, 172 km from Victoria Falls) and drive 23 km on tar to Main Camp at the park entrance.
