Campsite
Five shaded riverside sites on the Mwenezi in Gonarezhou's quiet southern section, the only developed camping in the south.
Park conservation fees are extra, paid at the gate.
The developed camp of Gonarezhou's quiet southern section, shaded by tall trees on the Mwenezi River. A practical base for the river pools and for travellers arriving from Beitbridge.
Mabalauta is the base for the southern, Mwenezi side of Gonarezhou, a much quieter section than the Chilojo area, with the baobab-studded Swimuwini chalets and the park office nearby. The five sites sit on the bank of the Mwenezi River under a tall canopy of trees, and a shared attendant keeps the wood-fired water heater going. The river here runs as sandy channels and pools; drives along it lead to Rossi Pools and other spots where crocodiles bask and antelope, nyala among them, come down to drink. It is reached by gravel from Beitbridge via Malipati, or via the Boli and Sango gates, and in the dry season a high-clearance vehicle copes on the main roads. The ablutions are basic, and the drive across to the Chilojo Cliffs takes about five hours.

Gravel access from Beitbridge via Malipati. In the dry season most park roads are passable in a high-clearance 2WD except river crossings; 4x4 recommended. No driving between 18:00 and 06:00.
From Beitbridge take the gravel road to Malipati Gate; or enter via Boli or Sango Gate and report to the Mabalauta office first. From Chipinda Pools in the north it is about 111 km (around 5 hours) through the park; Sango border post is about 36 km away.
