A dependable old highway motel on the Bubi River that overlanders use for the first night north of Beitbridge. Handy and sociable, but noisy from the road and not a place to linger.
For decades the Lion & Elephant has been where travellers heading north from Beitbridge pull in for their first night in Zimbabwe, and campers still share its lawns with the motel's thatched rooms. The grounds run along the Bubi River under big trees, and evenings tend to revolve around the restaurant, bar and the terrace above the riverbed. It is easy to reach on the tarred A4, about 75 km north of the border and right beside Bubi village, which has fuel and a few shops. Treat it as a convenient overnight stop rather than a destination: the camping area sits close to the highway and trucks run through the night.
