A bird rescue sanctuary on the north shore of Lake Chivero where campers pitch beside the chalets and spend the day with falconry shows, canoes and boat trips. Handy for a night near Harare, though busy with day visitors.
Kuimba Shiri began as a falconer's rescue and rehabilitation centre for injured and orphaned birds, and campers share its lakeside grounds with eagles, owls and falcons in the aviaries and wild waterbirds along Hippo Creek. Tents go up under msasa trees next to the chalets on the north shore of Lake Chivero, with the restaurant looking over the water. Days fit around the flying and falconry demonstrations, a canoe on the creek or a sunset boat trip, including crossings to view game in the national park on the far bank. It is under 30 km from Harare off the Bulawayo road, the last stretch on gravel, so it suits a first or last night near the capital as well as birders. Entry to the sanctuary is charged on top of camping, and the gates keep daytime hours.

From central Harare follow Samora Machel Avenue onto the Bulawayo road. About 25.8 km from the Samora Machel/Bishop Gaul junction turn left at the service station onto a tar road; where the tar ends (about 27.5 km) turn left onto gravel at the Kuimba Shiri sign, then right into the sanctuary at about 28.2 km.
