Bush camp
Exclusive-use bush camp on a high bank of the Runde River with a view upstream to the red Chilojo Cliffs.
Park conservation fees are extra, paid at the gate.
A private pitch above the Runde with Gonarezhou's best-known view, the Chilojo Cliffs, and elephants moving through the baobabs. It rewards self-sufficient 4x4 travellers who want the cliffs without company.
Hlaro is one of the handful of exclusive sites on the Runde River near the Chilojo Cliffs, the 13 km sandstone wall that is Gonarezhou's signature view, and campers who have stayed here single it out for that outlook. The pitch sits on a raised bank among big baobabs, and elephants feeding on the trees and coming down to the sandy river, with hippos in the pools, are part of a normal day. Only your own party is in camp, although the Directors site lies a few hundred metres away. It is about two hours' drive from Chipinda Pools on slow dirt roads, so it suits self-sufficient 4x4 crews with bush experience. Bring all water and firewood, plan around the 18:00 camp curfew,.

Reviews are campers' own opinions, not Campesa's. They don't change the campfire score.
No tar in the park; slow sandy and rocky tracks with river crossings. High-clearance 4x4 recommended and two vehicles with recovery gear for remote areas. No driving between 18:00 and 06:00. Ask reservations which causeways are open.
Enter at Chipinda Pools (main northern gate, about an hour from Chiredzi via the Ngundu-Tanganda road), then follow the river route east about 37 km (around 2 hours) towards the Chilojo Cliffs; Hlaro is just west of the Chilojo exclusive sites, beside the Directors site.
