A relaxed, family-run base in the Bvumba with space for big rigs and a bistro next door. Informal sites and a nursery-and-activity-centre atmosphere rather than wilderness.
Hivu began as a fern nursery that Sally Preston started in 1985 on land her parents had cleared for coffee in 1968, and she and Stu Preston now run it as a nursery, bistro, basketware workshop and small adventure park at the 27 km peg on the Bvumba road. Campers spread out on informal grassy sites under tall trees, with space for tents and large overland vehicles, and breakfast or a light meal at the bistro is a few steps away. The office hands out a map of footpaths and 4x4 tracks into the surrounding hills, and horse riding and guided walks can be arranged; the Vumba Botanical Gardens are just down the road. It is right on the main road, easy for any vehicle. Register at the office before 5 pm or let them know you will arrive later; loud music is not allowed.
