A sleep-out platform above a waterhole in the Main Camp sector, rebuilt in 2024 with a secure area for campers. The appeal is a night spent watching elephants drink a few metres below.
Guvalala is one of Hwange's two sleep-out platforms: a thatched hide on tall stilts above a pumped waterhole west of Main Camp, where the booked party spends the night looking down on whatever comes to drink, often elephants at close range. After years of neglect it was rebuilt in 2024 by the Friends of Hwange, with a new roof, repaired plumbing and ablutions, a donkey boiler for hot water and a secure enclosed area under the platform for campers. By day it is a stop on the Main Camp game-drive loops, so expect visitors until evening. Game depends on the water level, which has dropped in drought years, and there is nothing to buy, so bring all food, bedding and drinking water.
