Forestry Commission campsite inside Chirinda Forest, Africa's southernmost subtropical rainforest, near the giant red mahogany called the Big Tree.
A simple Forestry Commission camp whose setting is the whole point: deep evergreen forest, giant mahoganies and some of Zimbabwe's best forest birding. Best for self-sufficient naturalists happy with basic facilities.
Chirinda is a 950-hectare island of evergreen rainforest on the slopes of Mount Selinda, right by the Mozambique border, and the campsite sits about 4 km inside it. Canopy trees tower overhead, mist and dew keep the moss-covered paths damp all year, and the forest rings with birdcalls from trumpeter and silvery-cheeked hornbills, Livingstone's turaco and highland species such as Swynnerton's robin and the Chirinda apalis; samango monkeys are seen often. A walk leads to the Big Tree, a red mahogany centuries old in the Valley of the Giants, still Zimbabwe's tallest native tree despite lightning damage. Mount Selinda is about 30 km south of Chipinge, on a road with slow, broken patches. Facilities are basic and run by the Forestry Commission, so bring your own food, fuel and water, and expect cool, wet nights.

Some patches of the road from Chipinge are in poor condition and slow going; the last 4 km is a forest track.
From Chipinge drive about 30 km south to Mount Selinda. The signed track to the campsite leaves the main road just east of the mission hospital and runs about 4 km into the forest.
