An exclusive-use wilderness site in the little-visited north-east of Gonarezhou. Simple and private, best used as a base for the cliffs and eastern pans.
About
Bopomela is one of Gonarezhou's eleven wilderness sites, a simple clearing in the bush in the park's quiet north-east, east of the Chilojo Cliffs and on the way towards Machaniwa and Tembwahata pans and the Save-Runde confluence. The whole site is yours for the stay, so evenings are spent around your own fire listening for lion, hyena and nightjars, with no lights or neighbours. It works as a quieter, cheaper alternative to the exclusive camps under the cliffs and as a stepping stone for exploring the eastern pans. Expect slow driving on sandy tracks and river crossings: a high-clearance 4x4, recovery gear and ideally a second vehicle are wise. Bring every litre of water and all supplies, as nothing is available in the park.

Getting there
In the north-east of the park, east of the Chilojo Cliffs (Chipinda Pools to the cliffs is about 37 km, roughly 2 hours). Tracks here are seasonal (May to November) and need a high-clearance 4x4; sand-river crossings call for lowered tyre pressures, recovery gear and preferably two vehicles. Check which causeways are open with reservations.
