A simple riverbank campsite in the Chiawa GMA where hippos graze round the tents and carmine bee-eaters nest across the Zambezi. Fishing, sunset cruises and boat trips into Lower Zambezi National Park run from camp.
About
Woods Camp is a stretch of Zambezi riverbank in the unfenced Chiawa Game Management Area upstream of Lower Zambezi National Park, run with the neighbouring Muchichili Safari House. The river is the whole point: carmine bee-eaters nest in the bank across the water, hippos come up to graze between the tents after dark, and elephants pass through camp, so evenings round your own fire are lively and nights are noisy. A thatched insaka with a bar is the place to meet other campers, and the camp's own boat runs tiger-fishing outings, sunset cruises and trips downriver into the national park. The last stretch from Chirundu is a rough track best done in a 4x4. Because nothing is fenced, keep children close and torches handy at night.
