Community camp
Mukungule community camp on the fast-flowing Mwaleshi River, the western base for North Luangwa near Mano Gate.
A community-owned riverside camp on the Muchinga Escarpment that makes a cool, quiet staging post for North Luangwa. The rock pools and forest walks are the draw; the big game is a drive away inside the park.
Samala is owned by the Mukungule community and sits up on the Muchinga Escarpment beside the Mwaleshi River, about 10 km from North Luangwa's Mano Gate. The river here runs fast over rocks through green riverine forest, with rock pools where staff will show you a safe place to swim, and the setting feels more like mountain foothills than the hot valley below. It is cool, free of tsetse and good for walks and birding, which makes it a restful first or last night before the park and its Amatololo Loop. Winter nights up here are cold and dewy. Game drives into the park are not practical as day trips from camp, so plan to move on into the park to see wildlife.

About 42 km of dirt track from the Great North Road. The park beyond Mano Gate is 4x4 only.
Turn east off the Great North Road at Lwanya village (also mapped as Chitembo), north of Mpika, and follow the signs for 42 km to the camp. Alternatively come from Mpika via Katibunga. About 3 hours from Mpika; Mano Gate is about 10 km further on.
