Community camp
Community campsite on tree islands at the edge of the Bangweulu floodplains, the base for shoebill trips into the swamps.
The community-run gateway camp to the Bangweulu Wetlands, with spread-out pitches on tree islands above the floodplains and shoebill trips leaving from camp. Remote and seasonal, but one of Zambia's most distinctive wildlife settings.
Nsobe is the community campsite of the Bangweulu Wetlands, set on old tree islands in termite-mound woodland where it meets the open floodplain grassland, with the sites spread out under their own trees and views to the horizon. Black lechwe, tsessebe and zebra graze the plains, and the camp is where shoebill trips start: an early drive to the harbour, then hours by canoe into the swamps with a community guide. Sunsets over the grasslands are a highlight, hyenas call at night, and the small community team are welcoming and help with fires and chores. The camp is run on behalf of the communities of the Game Management Area, and its income goes to them. It is a long, slow drive in, about two hours past the entrance gate, and the camp only opens once the floods recede.

Slow dirt roads through villages; high-clearance 4x4 needed for self-drive in the wetlands. Allow about two hours from the gate to camp.
From the Great North Road, turn west at the Bangweulu Wetlands signpost 12 km north of the Kalonje railway (about 70 km south of Mpika) and drive 66 km through Lavushi Manda National Park (the signposted turn-off comes after 57 km), then 9 km to the GMA entrance gate. From the gate it is 35 km (about 1.5 hours) to Muwele, the last village; turn left at the radio tower and school, continue 7.5 km and take the signposted left turn to Nsobe Camp.
