Bush camp
Caretaker-run campsite at the Mwaleshi–Luangwa confluence, facing North Luangwa across a river full of hippos.
A remote caretaker-run campsite where the Mwaleshi meets the Luangwa, facing North Luangwa across a river crowded with hippos. Only for well-equipped 4x4 travellers in the dry season.
Kanunshya sits on the east bank of the Luangwa River where the Mwaleshi flows in, looking straight across the water into North Luangwa National Park. The confluence holds a pod of several hundred hippos, and elephants, baboons and antelope come down to the far bank, so evenings are spent watching the river to a chorus of grunting hippos. Two caretakers look after the site, lay the evening fire and heat shower water on request, a rare touch this far from anywhere. Getting there is an expedition: a long dry-season track north of Luambe through Zokwe and Kanunshya Gate, then a guided 6 km run with a 4x4 crossing of the Lundazi River. Crocodiles make the water's edge unsafe, and the camp opens only from mid-June to the end of October.

Faint track from Kanunshya Gate needs a guide; the Lundazi River crossing needs 4x4 and is dry only from about July. The approach via Luambe crosses the Lukusuzi River, wet until July. Dry season only.
From Luambe National Park's northern Chipuka Gate, drive about 9 km to the Chitungulu court house, turn left past Zokwe village to the Zokwe scout camp (sign in at the barrier), continue about 30 km to Chiweza School, turn left and go about 17 km to Kanunshya Gate. From the gate a scout or camp staff member guides you the last 6.1 km: right at the fork after 700 m, a 4x4 crossing of the Lundazi River at 1.6 km and a small stream at 2.8 km. Camp coordinates S12°02'20" E32°21'13".
