Lodge camping
Three private grassy pitches at KaingU Safari Lodge where the Kafue starts to break over rapids, across from Kafue National Park.
Three private pitches belonging to KaingU Safari Lodge, set on the Kafue where it breaks over rapids opposite Kafue National Park. Campers get the lodge's guiding and river activities while staying wild and unfenced.
KaingU's campsites sit on the Kafue just below the lodge, where the river begins to tumble through a band of rapids and granite boulders, with Kafue National Park on the far bank. There are only three pitches, each with its own thatched shelter and ablution block: two Rapids sites side by side but screened from each other, and the more secluded Chief's site about 650 m downstream. An attendant stokes the donkey boiler and brings firewood, and campers can book the lodge's boat cruises, fishing, canoeing and guided walks, or follow a path down to the rapids and drive two self-guided loops. The area is unfenced, with elephant, lion, leopard and hippo about, so no walking to the lodge after dark. Expect a slow last 43 km on bush tracks from the D769 and no fuel or ice for sale.

Reviews are campers' own opinions, not Campesa's. They don't change the campfire score.
Reachable in the dry season in a high-clearance 2WD; sedans not recommended. Keep to 30-35 km/h on the bush tracks (rocks and stumps near the edges). Roads are not signposted and the lodge warns that Google Maps can route you onto the worst roads. Stop for 5 minutes at the tsetse control point before entering camp. No fuel for sale: fill up at Mumbwa, Kaoma or Itezhi-Tezhi.
From Lusaka take the M9 west past the Mumbwa turn-off (151 km) and Nalusanga Gate (30 km on); 28 km after the gate turn left (south) onto the tarred D769 Itezhi-Tezhi road. After about 50 km pass the DNPW/GRI Mweengwa wildlife checkpoint, where the road turns to gravel; 3 km further (S15°17'56.0" E26°14'09.2") turn right (west) at the KaingU Lodge/Puku Pans signs and follow the bush track 25 km to the next KaingU sign (S15°12'02.1" E26°04'18.6"), turn left (south) and drive about 18 km, crossing the Mweengwa pole bridge, into camp. From Itezhi-Tezhi town drive about 60 km north on the D769 to the same turn. About 302 km and 5.5-6 hours from Lusaka. The alternative route through the park via the Spinal Road ends at a car park across the river and cannot be used by campers.
