A town-edge resort on the Tilda Viljoen Dam, built from the ruins of an old prison, with a sunset deck over the water. A practical Trans-Kalahari stop with a few campsites, livelier than a bush camp.
About
Die Dam stands on the eastern bank of the Tilda Viljoen Dam at the edge of Gobabis, where the owners have rebuilt the ruins of an early-1900s prison into a resort since 2001; the restaurant now occupies the old jail. Evenings gather on the bar deck above the water for sunset, and by day the dam draws waterbirds and anglers, with canoes and paddle boats out when the level allows. The campsites are a small part of a busy place with chalets, a restaurant and events, and townspeople come here to eat and meet, so expect company rather than bush quiet. It is less than a kilometre from town on the Trans-Kalahari route to Botswana, a convenient overnight stop; there are only a handful of pitches, so book ahead.
