A long-established family sheep and horse farm that works as a stopover on the B1 through the far south. The appeal is the farm itself, its game and a sunset walk, with camping a minor extra.
Savanna is a 22,000-hectare Dorper sheep farm run by the von Schauroth family from a main house the German Schutztruppe built in the early 1900s; the family also breed and train Arabian horses for endurance riding. Most people stop here on the long B1 run between the Orange River and Keetmanshoop, and the evening ritual is a sunset walk up the stony hills. Springbok, kudu, oryx, klipspringer and steenbok roam the farm, and there are trails to hike or drive at your own pace. The farm lies about 1 km off the tar, roughly 40 km north of Grünau, and Fish River Canyon is about 120 km away. Camping is a small side-line to the guest rooms, so phone ahead to arrange a pitch; dinners of farm lamb or venison can be booked at the house.
