- Dry winter months, when elephants gather along the channel
A conservancy-owned camp on a seasonal channel at the gate of Nkasa Rupara, where dry-season elephants drink within sight of the sites. Quiet rules and big shade trees make it a calm base for the park, reached by 4x4.
About
Rupara sits on the bank of the seasonal Harubandi channel just outside Nkasa Rupara National Park, on land of the Wuparo Conservancy, which receives a share of every camping fee. The three private sites look straight over the channel from under marula and leadwood trees, while the four standard sites sit further back among jackalberries. In the dry winter months elephants walk out of the woodland in the afternoon to drink and wallow below camp, and buffalo, hippo and lion live in the park next door. Music through speakers and generators are banned, so evenings belong to the fire and the night sounds. The last stretch on the D3518 past Sangwali needs a 4x4, though it is not difficult; animals roam freely through camp, so carry a torch after dark and buy firewood at reception.

Getting there
Off the usual routes; a 4x4 is needed on the final gravel and sand stretch, though the road is not difficult. Tracks in the park can flood in the rainy season.
From Katima Mulilo take the C49 west (about 145 km in all), or from Kongola the C49 east for about 60 km, then turn south onto the D3518 towards Sangwali. The camp is about 8 km south of Sangwali on the road to Nkasa Rupara National Park, 3 km before the park entrance.
