About
Rock Arch is the camp people make the extra effort for in the northern Namib-Naukluft: two pitches tucked into a granite valley beyond Tinkas, the main one just behind a natural stone arch. Overhangs and shallow caves in the rock give shelter from the wind, and campers often pitch right under them. After dark the eroded boulders take on the shapes of dragons and gargoyles in the moonlight, which some find eerie. The Tinkas nature walk, best started early, and the graves of two German soldiers lie close by. Reaching it means a slow 4x4 track over sandy riverbeds and stony stretches from the C28 via Bloedkoppie. There is nothing on site, the wind can turn cold, so bring all water, firewood and fuel, and buy the park permit before you go.
