Ostrich and crocodile farm just north of Okahandja with grassy pitches, a game waterhole and an easy first or last night out of Windhoek.
A family-run ostrich and crocodile farm near Okahandja whose farm tour and sunset waterhole make it more than a roadside stop. It suits families and travellers needing an easy first or last night near Windhoek.
Ombo sits in bushveld 12 km north of Okahandja and doubles as an ostrich and crocodile farm, so a stay usually includes the daily tour where guests can feed and touch the ostriches and meet the farm's tortoises, warthog and Nile crocodile. In the late afternoon springbok, waterbuck, giraffe and ostriches come to the waterhole, visible from the restaurant, which is the place to be at sunset. A short trail with named indigenous trees and plenty of birds makes a good leg-stretch. Grassy, shaded pitches lie a short drive off the B1, which makes it an easy stopover on the road north from Windhoek. Expect a family farm atmosphere rather than wilderness, and a no-music rule for the animals' sake.
