Niedersachsen is a historic guest farm below the Us Pass with a small, quiet campsite in a dry riverbed. Its Sheltering Desert history, Kuiseb drives and dark skies give campers a reason to stay longer than one night.
Niedersachsen is an 18,000-hectare farm where the Khomas Highland breaks down towards the Namib, run by the Kotzé family from a hilltop farmhouse with views to the Gamsberg. Its story is tied to Henno Martin and Hermann Korn, the two geologists of The Sheltering Desert, and one of the stone shelters they lived in during the Second World War still stands on a tour the farm runs. The five-pitch campsite lies apart along a dry riverbed, with hills to climb for the view, dark skies at night and a chance of oryx, mountain zebra or klipspringer; campers can book farm meals, a Kuiseb game drive or the free walking trails. There is no electricity and only one shared open ablution, so come self-sufficient, carry out your rubbish because of baboons, and allow for gravel roads all the way.
