Campsite
Exclusive-use dune campsite with its own waterhole on an old karakul farm inside NamibRand's dark-sky reserve.
A single-party campsite among the red dunes of NamibRand, with its own waterhole where oryx and springbok drink. Chosen for solitude and some of the darkest night skies in southern Africa.
Orion was the first of the Family Hideout's three private campsites, set in its own red-dune valley on Stellarine, a former karakul sheep farm in the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Only one party camps here at a time, out of sight and earshot of the other sites, and a small waterhole in front of the pitch brings oryx and springbok in to drink, with the odd bat-eared fox or zebra. Campers tend to remember the solitude and the sky: NamibRand is a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserve, and on moonless nights the Milky Way is vivid. Dunes start at the edge of camp, and the reserve's free self-drive 4x4 loop, guided dune drives and a koppie climb are close by. It lies about 16 km off the C27; bring all food and firewood, and expect cold nights from June to August.

Mostly gravel to the Hideout, about 16 km from the C27. The camping page says Orion can be reached without a 4x4, though the campsite guest sheet recommends high clearance or 4x4 for all three campsites. On the reserve's self-drive trail, 4x4 and tyres deflated to 120 kPa are required because of thick sand; speed limit 40 km/h; no off-road driving or drones.
From Maltahöhe (west), Aus (north) or Sesriem (south, about 110 km) drive to the D826/C27 junction area and take the signposted Tok Tokkie Trails turn-off about 400 m north of the D827 intersection (C27 entrance 25°24'10.59"S, 16°6'26.75"E). Call in at the reception next to the Die Duine farmstead (25°14'27.1"S, 16°03'44.1"E) for directions, then drive past the Family Hideout farmhouse following the campsite signs: Jupiter is the first turn-off to the right, Orion the second, Venus the third.
