Riverfront camping in the shady grounds of a lodge on the Kunene, with boat cruises and excellent birding on the doorstep. Access is a long gravel drive that can be cut by floods in the rains.
The campsites sit in the grounds of Kunene River Lodge on the Namibian bank of the Kunene, under thick shade from old leadwood and jackalberry trees, and most look straight onto the river. The lodge's river deck and boat cruises are a short walk away, and the camp makes a good base for birders after the river's rare endemics, rafting at Ondorusu Gorge and Himba village visits. The lodge is closed for renovation until January 2027, and the gravel roads in can flood in the rains, so check conditions before driving.

Gravel roads, graded regularly; 4x4 is not needed in the dry season but a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. From December to April the D3700 is not advised as rivers may flow, and if the Kunene floods the diversions on the Ruacana road need 4x4. Phone the lodge for road conditions in the rains.
From Ruacana take the D3701 west; about 15 km out the road turns to gravel for the last 45 km to the lodge. From Epupa Falls, a 96 km riverside road follows the Kunene past the Zebra Mountains; from Opuwo, the D3700 via Epembe and the D3701 via Swartbooisdrift.
