San community camp on the Khwai River near Mababe, with six far-apart, unfenced riverside sites that elephants walk through.
A San community camp on the Khwai River near Mababe where six far-apart sites face the river and elephants feed through camp. Its management has changed often and upkeep varies, so it suits self-sufficient 4x4 travellers who confirm their booking first.
Tshaa, also known as Xanakgaei Riverside Camp, belongs to the San community of Mababe village and sits on the Khwai River where it runs out towards the Mababe Depression, between Moremi's Khwai area and Savuti. The six sites are spread well apart under big riverine trees with no fence, so a stay is about having the river to yourself: elephants feed through camp, hippos grunt from the water at night, and the far sites look out over the floodplain. Visitors can arrange time with Mababe's Bushmen community to learn about their crafts and way of life. It lies about 125 km north-east of Maun on sand tracks that need a 4x4 and turn muddy in the rains. Management has changed hands several times and upkeep varies, so confirm with the trust before driving out and bring everything from Maun.
