Tree Island is a cluster of three secluded pitches on a wooded mound in Makgadikgadi's empty eastern grasslands, with site 1 looking straight onto a pan. It is for self-sufficient 4x4 travellers who want solitude and big skies more than dense game.
Tree Island is a low, tree-covered mound that stands out for kilometres across the flat grassland of Makgadikgadi's remote eastern plains, and its three sites sit about 50 m apart, screened from each other by the trees. Site 1 is the one to ask for: it opens onto the pan, where sunrise is the moment to be up, while sites 2 and 3 sit further back in the bush. Campers often have the island to themselves; game is thinner than along the Boteti, but gemsbok, springbok and zebra graze the plains, wildebeest and zebra gather to the south-east after the rains, and lions are sometimes heard at night. The easiest approach is from Gweta through Makolwane Gate, under two hours' drive. Bring all your water, expect persistent small flies in warm months and navigate carefully on sparsely signed tracks.

4x4 only. The track near Tree Island is good, but the east-west cutline from Khumaga is badly corrugated for its first 20 km or so, and the sandiest stretches lie between the east of the park and the Boteti, hard going with a trailer. Few signposts: carry a GPS track. Some tracks are muddy after rain. Gate hours 06:00-18:30 (April-September) and 05:30-19:00 (October-March).
From Gweta on the A3, drive west to Makolwane Gate in the park's north-east corner (signed, but not visible from the main road), then follow park tracks south-west to Tree Island; allow just under two hours from Gweta. From the west, the east-west cutline from the Khumaga side reaches it but is long and rough.
