A San community camp on the Khwai River near Mababe, with big, private riverside sites that elephants, hippos and hyenas pass through. The setting is excellent but management has been patchy, so it suits self-reliant 4x4 travellers who confirm their booking first.
Dizhana belongs to the San (Basarwa) people of Mababe village through their community trust, and it sits on the Khwai River in community land between Moremi and Chobe. The six sites are large, shaded and spread well apart along the bank, and the camp is unfenced: elephants come down to drink on the far side of the channel in the afternoon and sometimes stroll through camp, while hippos and hyenas carry on after dark. It is about 125 km north-east of Maun on sand tracks, some 20 minutes from Mababe village, so a 4x4 is needed, and it makes a quiet base between Khwai, the Mababe Depression and Savuti. Upkeep and bookings have been uneven over the years, so confirm with the trust before setting out and bring all supplies from Maun.
