Bush camp
Shady pitch on a peninsula jutting into Mpayathutlwa Pan in Mabuasehube, with a wide view over the pan.
A single shaded pitch on a peninsula in Mpayathutlwa Pan, among the best-placed spots in Mabuasehube for watching the pan. It is basic and unfenced, for self-sufficient 4x4 travellers.
Lefika sits on a small peninsula that pushes out into Mpayathutlwa (Mpaya) Pan, one of the large central pans of the Mabuasehube section, between the two Mpayathutlwa campsites. The pitch is well shaded and looks straight across the open pan, where springbok and gemsbok come to the waterhole, vultures gather in the midday heat and lions are seen from time to time. The camp is unfenced, so animals can walk through after dark, and winter nights freeze while summer days are fierce. Getting here takes a 4x4 on sand from Tsabong, Sekoma or Hukuntsi to the Mabuasehube Gate, then about 20 km inside the park. There is no drinkable water, fuel, shop or phone signal in the section, so bring everything and book well ahead.

4x4 needed on sand; deflate tyres and carry a compressor. Be in camp by gate closing time (about 18:00 to 19:30 depending on month).
In the Mabuasehube section on the eastern side of the Botswana Kgalagadi, on the western side of Mpayathutlwa Pan between Mpayathutlwa sites 1 and 2, about 20 km from the Mabuasehube Gate. Reach the gate from McCarthy's Rest via Tsabong (about 140 km: 27 km tar, 56 km gravel, 56 km sand), from Sekoma (about 80 km tar then about 140 km of sandy cutline) or from Hukuntsi (about 140 km of sand and gravel).
