Community-run campsite at the entrance gate to the Tsodilo Hills, Botswana's painted World Heritage hills in the far north-west.
The Tsodilo Hills rise abruptly out of flat Kalahari savanna, hold more than 4,500 rock paintings and are sacred to the San and Hambukushu who live around them. This campsite sits at the entrance gate, built by the local community with a craft centre and opened in 2013, when camping beside the museum was stopped. Days start with the short drive in to the museum to collect a local guide for the Rhino, Lion or Cliff trails, and the hills are best walked early before the heat builds. Shakawe is about 50 km away on a dirt road with sandy stretches, so a 4x4 is the safer choice. Visitors often find the ablutions poorly kept, and in some years campers have been sent to the museum campsite instead, so come self-sufficient and check at the gate.

Good dirt road from Shakawe, but sandy stretches between the hills make a 4x4 advisable.
About 50 km from Shakawe. The campsite is at the entrance gate to the Tsodilo Hills site; the museum and office, where entry is paid and guides are booked, are a short drive further in.
