A long-established, sociable stopover in Palapye built around a pub, pools and a buffet in a shaded walled garden. Its value is its position on the main north-south road; the railway next door, late bar noise and uneven upkeep are the catches.
Camp Itumela, whose name means 'happy place', has been the overlanders' stop in Palapye for years: a walled garden of green lawn and thorn trees tucked behind the railway station, a welcome patch of shade in a dusty town. Evenings gather around the family pub with its pool table and darts, the buffet dinner and the pools, so it suits travellers who want company and families with young children rather than anyone after quiet. Visitors tend to find it a convenient, friendly one-night break on the long north-south drive, though upkeep has been uneven and music from the bar can run late; trains pass close by too. Old Palapye's Phalatswe ruins, Moremi Gorge (about 40 km) and Khama Rhino Sanctuary (about 80 km) make easy outings. Phone ahead, as the approach crosses the railway line.
